Near & Fair Dinner 2018

Posted October 25th 2018

Thanks to everyone who dined with us and supported our first ever Near & Fair Dinner, celebrating Manitoba’s connections and commitment to fair trade!

Last year, Winnipeg became the fourth Fair Trade Town in Manitoba, 25th in Canada and 2000th in the world! To celebrate this milestone and to recognize the progress we’ve made together as a province, we decided to do something special by bringing together Manitoba’s four fair trade communities for a culinary celebration that combined some of our favourite local and fair trade ingredients.

In Manitoba we have a strong agricultural community and a powerful buy local movement. Manitobans have shown they care about the people behind their products and fair trade is the global extension of that sentiment. Imports like coffee, cocoa, spices, tropical fruit and sugarcane are products we enjoy daily — the people who grow, harvest and process these items deserve the same respect we show our local producers.

Thanks to people like you, more Manitobans are thinking about social sustainability, the people behind the products they buy and how we can help grow fair and prosperous communities at home and abroad.

Special thanks to Julie Francouer, executive director of Fairtrade Canada, who eloquently took guests on a journey to the Global South, helping us imagine the origins of the food we enjoyed and the lives of the farmers and workers who made our meal possible.

This event also wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors:
