Fair Trade at the Gimli Olympic Torch Run

January 6th saw Gimli host the Olympic Torch Run as it made its way through Manitoba’s Interlake Region. Premier Greg Selinger even took a turn at carrying the torch. Gimli became Canada’s sixth Fair Trade Town on July 1, 2009, as recognized by Transfair Canada.
Thanks to MCIC, and La Siembra Co-operative in Ottawa, the Gimli Recreation Authority served free fair trade hot chocolate and chocolate bars to hundreds of youth taking part in winter sports activities throughout the Torch Run day. Celebrating the Olympics, enjoying fun and fitness outdoors, and benefiting producers from the Global South in the celebrations and games made for a well-rounded international day!
