The first annual **Canadian Fair Trade Awards** were presented to seven Canadian retail and food service businesses on September 20, 2012 at a ceremony in Toronto. These organizations were recognized for their ongoing commitment to Fair Trade – an ethical approach to doing business that supports farming communities, ethical labour practices and sustainable agriculture around the world. The British chocolate firm, Green & Black’s, announced in March of 2011 that it had fulfilled its pledge to go entirely organic and fair trade as of the end of that year. This made the company, actually now somewhat unhappily a small part of the Cadbury’s and Kraft empire, the world’s largest retailer of fair trade chocolate. It also continued the legacy of its founders in supporting producers in developing countries since they made a commitment to cocoa growers in Belize in 1994. Read More »

By Zack Gross With the Olympics now wrapped up, some of us will be relieved to get our favourite TV programs back or have a chance to sit out in the yard, rather than in front of the widescreen. Others will be going through withdrawal and looking forward to the next Olympics – winter of 2014 in Sochi, Russia and summer of 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the background items to this year’s version of the Olympic Dream that has received very little coverage is the step forward that the Games have taken in adopting green and fair trade policies and practices in managing events and in the products they serve.
