One-Month Challenge 2012

It’s time again for you to show your dedication to fair wages for producers in the Global South, by taking MCIC’s annual One-Month Challenge. Beginning on Valentine’s Day and running for thirty days, the One-Month Challenge encourages Manitobans to consume only fair trade brands of coffee, tea and chocolate for 30 days beginning February 14. Thousands of Manitobans have already taken the challenge in previous years by pledging their commitment and getting friends and colleagues to sign on as well. Empowering Women Through Economic Development

On Friday, February 10, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm, The Marquis Project will be partnering with WUSC at Brandon University to host an International Development Day presentation titled “Empowering Women Through Economic Development”.
The session will feature audiovisual presentations and speakers talking about:

· “Mothers of Intention”: Educating Children by Educating Mothers in Bangladesh (Judy Bartel)
· Immigrant Women’s Market in Brandon. (Hope Roberts)

Lunch and Learn: Presentation on Haiti Construction - Two Years After the Hurricane by Tarik Khan

Tarik Ali Khan is the Director of Haiti Programming at the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), where he has been responsible for Canada’s bilateral contribution to Haiti’s reconstruction since the 2010 earthquake. Tarik has served in several managerial positions in the area of international development policies and programming, including CIDA Head of Cooperation in China (2008-2010), Director, Democratic Institutions and Conflict in CIDA Policy Branch (2005-2008) and Manager, Analysis and Performance, Canada Fund for Africa (2004-2005).

Lunch and Learn: Flavia Aarden-Kilger

Flavia Aarden-Kilger is the Managing Director of Fair Trade Brokers Ltd in British Columbia. Fair Trade Brokers imports Fair Trade goods such as juices, candy, rice cakes, chocolates, tea and coffee and sells them in Canada. Flavia will be talking about her Fair Trade business and the benefits of Fair Trade for producers in the Global South.

Public Launch of International Development Week 2012 in Manitoba

Manitoba Legislative Building, 450 Broadway, Winnipeg
MCIC will launch IDW 2012 with an ethical fashion show, showcasing ethically-made, green and Fair Trade fashions available in Canada. Many of these clothes have been made in women’s cooperatives which ensure that women are paid fairly for their work and have access to health care and education. Modelling these clothes will be some of the eight young Manitobans who wrote, composed and recorded the song “Unbreakable”, a song about the importance of the empowerment of women and girls in our world. The music video for “Unbreakable” will be premiered during the launch. The event will include the public premiere of the i am making a difference video profiles of nine Manitoban Global Citizens. There will also be displays by MCIC member agencies and Rebecca Mellett, the Director of CIDA Prairies and Pacific Region will address the audience. The general public is invited to attend this launch from 11:45am - 1:30pm.

Taking IT Global: Creating Virtual Platforms For International Development
