Handwoven Resistance

Jolom Mayaetik is an indigenous, women’s, fair-trade weaving cooperative made up of over 300 women in Chiapas, Mexico. The cooperative enables indigenous women to have a measure of economic autonomy whilst preserving the tradition of weaving and enabling their families and communities to maintain a stronghold on their land by providing a much-needed income.
Celia is the current president of the cooperative, and will be in Winnipeg to share her stories and their art with us.

The Be Yourself. Be Bold. Be the Change. Fair Trade Fashion Show

The Be Yourself, Be Bold, Be the Change Fashion Show will feature ethically made clothing from fair trade retailers. Our models will be outstanding Young Global Citizens from Manitoba who embrace the values of fair trade and work to make a better world for all. This event will also premiere the “I Hear Your Voice” music video, featuring an original song composed by a group of Manitoba High School students.

Showing of Buyer Be Fair Documentary

The one-hour documentary BUYER BE FAIR: The Promise of Product Certification takes viewers to Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States and Canada to explore how consumers and businesses can use the market to promote social justice and environmental sustainability through product labeling, with a focus on fair trade coffee and certified wood products. Zack Gross from MCIC’s Fair Trade Progam will give a presentation on fair trade. There is no admission cost. Free popcorn provided.

Fair Trade Coffee Break

To celebrate World Fair Trade Day, Fair Trade Manitoba is hosting a fair trade coffee break in the front foyer of the Millennium Library. This coffee break is part of the Fair Trade Resource Network’s attempt to set a new world record for the largest fair trade coffee break! The goal for North America is 55,000 people, so come down, have a fair trade beverage and help set a new world record!
Of course, the fair trade beverages and chocolate are complimentary, and there will also be a draw for a fair trade prize!

In celebration of World Fair Trade Day 2009, Ten Thousand Villages on Plaza Drive will be offering crafts for children (like making Mothers Day cards or small drums), face painting, and a chance to learn how to play Dakon!
There will be draws for those who complete a fair trade quiz and many products on sale throughout the store.
Also, there will be thank you gifts for the first 20 customers each day!

Fundraising Concert for Kenya Grandmothers, sponsored by Forest People’s Crafts.
6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m., music begins at 6:30 p.m..Performers include Andressa from Sierra Leone, Devon Bate and Callandra Mayhart playing guitar and singing, Rick Unruh Band, Geoge Laas and classical singer Ashley Klassen. The event is hosted by Tracy Koga of Shaw TV and features Maureen Hemphill, the former Minister of Education for Manitoba, as the keynote speaker.

Stolen Dreams exhibit launch

Begins at 7:30 p.m.
Join us for opening night of the Stolen Dreams exhibit, featuring photos documenting child labour around the world.
Opening night will involve a short explanation of the exhibit, a display of fair trade products and a light reception with snacks and fair trade beverages, including coffee, non-alcoholic sparkling teas and fair trade wine (for those 18+).
The Stolen Dreams exhibit will run at the Gimli New Iceland Heritage Museum until July 24.

Lunch & Learn with Kathy Sexsmith

Kathy Sexsmith, Project Officer with the International Institute for Sustainable Development, will speak about her experience in Chiapas, Mexico, conducting research on fair trade coffee production. Her master’s thesis at the University of Oxford focused on the fair trade coffee producer’s cooperative La Selva.
Admission is free and includes a fair trade beverage.
